When I enter the memory command in matlab it gives me the following:

??? Error using ==> memory
Function MEMORY is not available on this platform.

My Matlab version is 2008a and I am using a Linux platform. Does anyone know how I can get around this problem?

Thanks.

If you type help memory, there is a note in there -

The MEMORY function is currently available on PCWIN and PCWIN64 only.

Hence the error on your linux version of matlab.
