I'm on MacOS 10.5.7 and recently my dropdown buttons stopped work
(like the Cell Mode section selector). When I click it displays the
dropdown for half a second and disappears.

The only change I see is that now when I start Matlab, there's a
following Exception

I'm getting the same error message after starting Matlab (R2009a on Mac OS X 10.5.7), and getting the same drop down menu problem. Any word from TMW?

Same situation; but it started happening with 2007b. The problem persists now with 2009a. Any ideas?

Its a known bug, number 547093, see the release notes:
http://www.mathworks.com/access/helpdesk/help/techdoc/index.html
The "unofficial" patch worked for me, and it is listed as fixed in 2009b.
