To whom it may concern,

I have MATLAB but have not learned to use it chiefly because it has a
fairly steep learning curve and I really only need it to do a couple
of things. Thus, I am reaching out to the MATLAB user community in
hopes of finding someone who can help me solve these two problems. I
am willing to pay a reasonable consulting fee or your time.

Here is what I have—data-wise—and what I would like to do with it. I
have numerical data in ASCII format, as from a typical spreadsheet,
that represents one datum recorded each millisecond for 500
milliseconds. It is the acceleration of a human test subject under low
speed crash test conditions. I am trying to calculate a number called
the Neck Injury Criteria (NIC) which takes the following form:

where axT1 = the acceleration-time curve measured in the antero-
posterior (x) direction at the level of the first thoracic vertebra in
units of g. Likewise, axHead = the acceleration-time curve measured in
the antero-posterior (x) direction at the location of the center of
gravity of the head in units of g.

The integration of the acceleration (converted to m/s2) of the head
center of gravity in the time domain, giving the velocity in the x-
direction (resulting in units of m/s), is expressed by:

The integration of the acceleration (converted to m/s2) at the level

Now, presumably, MATLAB can handle this so that a data column of NIC
values can be created for each of the 500 milliseconds of data. That
way, I would be able to plot the NIC over time. Sound simple? Then I
need to talk to you! Please send me a note.


The other thing I’d like to know is whether MATLAB could then take
such a plot and integrate the area under the curve to provide a
quantity or power of NIC.
