Thread Subject: colorbar for several subplots

I have several subplots that share the same colormap. I'd like to add a colorbar. My subplot looks like 4 plots stacked on top of each other (i.e. 4 x 1). I would like to make my colorbar span the entire vertical distance of the 4 plots and be located to the left/right of them. Is this possible? The colorbar command seems to only be able to attach the colorbar to one subplot...

How do I create a colorbar for my subplots and associate the colorbar with the figure rather than each individual axes in MATLAB 7.7 (R2008b) ?
