Hello

Can anyone tell me if there is a toolbox for symbolic matrix calculus available? I have searched in MATLAB central with no luck.What about other software like mathematica or maple?

Thank you

Check out Symbolic Math Toolbox:
http://www.mathworks.com/products/symbolic/

It can do calculations with symbolic matrices.

For using the symbolic toolbox for matrix calculus one has to know the symbolic exprsession of each element in the symbolic matrix. I want to obtain the derivative of a matrix function wrt to the matrix, for example:

f=X^2 - A*X*B

with X A and B matrices or vectors of proper dimension, I want to find df/dX.

syms x creates a symbolic variable that represents a scalar.
Is there a function that can create a symbolic variable x which represents a matrix instead of a scalar
