Is there a way, in real time, to import pictures from a camera connected to a computer, say through a USB port.

yes, put something like this in a loop. specifics depend on your hardware and requirements. imaqhwinfo may be useful.

video_input=videoinput('winvideo')
preview(video_input)
video_snapshot=getsnapshot(video_input)
etc.
