Thread Subject: multiple lines in labeled ticks on axes

I'm trying to figure out a way to make multiple line for a labeled tick

example. normally:
set(h.axis,'XTickLabel', {'1', '2','3'})

what I'm trying to do:
set(h.axis,'XTickLabel', {'1', '2 \n mean','3'})

so the three ticks on the x axis would be labeled 1, 2 and 3 with an extra line below 2 saying "mean"

Possible?
