I'm trying to export a pcolor figure which has been rendered in painter.
If i just use the print name -depsc2 I end up with a rather large file that doesn't convert well to a pdf. (It's much smaller when using another renderer but I need to use painter to get some LaTeX symbols to compile correctly in the labels).

Ideally I'd like to export this so that the colour section is a bitmap (preferably png encoded) embedded in an eps file with the axis and captions so that they render slightly nicer if the image is resized slightly.

Is there any way of doing this?
