creating avi on a mac

Subject: creating avi on a mac

I am using a Matlab R2009a on my mac to create an avi movie:
%%%%%%%%%
aviobj = avifile('filename','fps',12);
for T=1:dim
     imagesc(X(:,:,T));
     frame=getframe;
     aviobj = addframe(aviobj,frame);
end
aviobj = close(aviobj);
%%%%%%%%%

The avi file is created, and plays fine on Windows, but it does not play on Quicktime v 10.0.
I am wondering if there is a way to use Matlab to convert this avi into a format that quicktime can read? Alternatively, is there a program I could download that would allow me to view this movie, or convert it? Or maybe there is another function other than 'avifile' to create movies?
Furthermore, the avi I create is quite large (250Mb) so some sort of compression would be nice, but 'avifile' can not use compression on Unix machines...
Any suggestions?
