I want to code a custom function that works like the zoom function:

zoom on

My function should also call "myfunc on" and enable the user to process a axes

Where do I start? does my function need callbacks?

Look in the function CAMZOOM for moving the camera to the point of view.
You need an interface to the user, e.g. the mouse or keyboard - therefore you definitely need some callbacks. e.g. the WindowsButtonMotionFcn or KeyPressFcn of the figure.
