Plot globe with country borders

I'm wanting to plot a simple globe with the international borders on it. The part I'm missing is some sort of database for the borders. I found topo data, so I can get the continental borders (coarsely) by plotting a contour as level 0, but I'd like the internal borders too if possible. I don't have the mapping toolbox. Can anyone point me to a data set?

Yeah, I saw that but it requires the mapping toolbox. I want the borders, but not for $1000 or whatever. I found a shapefile of political borders. Anyone know of a way to read a shapefile without the mapping toolbox? The description of the format looks a little too complex to knock out my own in an hour or two.

Save the gif image.

Get the FEX http://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/fileexchange/25048-plot-earth

Try this (free) mapping toolbox for Matlab:
http://www.eos.ubc.ca/~rich/map.html
It has world maps.
