Good morning, Steven Lord

I am a student of final year of computer engineering and I chose to work with image processing using Matlab, in my completion of course work.
Basically I intend to do the counting and the division of vehicles (car, bus, truck and motorcycle) in a street using a video camera.
I'm working based on code from Mathworks (http://www.mathworks.com/products/viprocessing/demos.html?file=/products/demos/shipping/vipblks/videotrafficof.html # 1), but the video demo (viptraffic.avi), this code does not distinguish the type of vehicle that is moving in the frame.

My main problems are:

- How to count only once each vehicle on the frame?;
- How to distinguish what type of vehicle is passing in the frame (car, truck, bus or motorcycle)?;
- How to know if the vehicles are stopped?;

I have little experience in MatLab, which is why I am making this contact with professional savvy.

I am very worried because I have a little less than one month for submission of final paper, so I ask your guidance.

Already thank you for your attention and support.

1) Use a connected components analysis and depending on your images, a morphological operation or two to segment vehicles.

2) Well what makes a car different than a truck? What makes a motorcycle different than a bus? Figure that out and then teach (command) the computer how to.

3) If the camera is fixed and they move between frames that would imply motion. If they're in the same place in each frame they're stopped.

Well for starters, you could look at the detected area. You could
also look at things like the perimeter squared-to-area ratio. Maybe
you'll have time to try template matching with the Hausdorf distance
like in this example where they find the jet in an image (http://
cgm.cs.mcgill.ca/~godfried/teaching/cg-projects/98/normand/
main.html#applic). You could have templates for truck, cars,
motorcycles and search the image for them. There are other kinds of
shape descriptors but you won't have time to look at anything too
sophisticated with just a month left.

The link works. You probably just got part of it, because the
newsreader split it across several lines. Build it up completely
somewhere (a text editor for example) then paste into your web
browser.

Or, perhaps more likely, you typed it in but because your keyboard
seems to be going defective, it's putting in random characters or
leaving out characters. For example (il, u, becouse, esamples, tpo,
wath, etc.). You might try a new keyboard.
