FEX Rating System

I think the way the FEX displays ratings for a certain scenario is wrong (or buggy).

In this file:
http://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/fileexchange/29011-simple-sudoku-solver

It says the file has received two ratings for one star. However, when you look at the file you see that it has received two ratings (from the same person) for one star. When I look at this from the FEX home page it appears as though two people have rated it with one star, when really it has received a five and one.

I think the FEX needs to make up its mind:
-if both ratings count for numel(ratings) they should be averaged
-if the former one doesn't count for the average it shouldn't for numel(ratings)

Before these fixes, something people asked many times is that authors shouldn't be able to rate their own submissions.

Dear Oleg,

> Before these fixes, something people asked many times is that authors shouldn't be able to rate their own submissions.

Selfrating is rare and obvious. Whenever I see a selfrating, I get a strong impression about the reliability of the code - comparable to a rating of James, Bruno, Matt, Jos, Yair, John and us (and others).

But non-self-ratings are very rare also. Looking over the first 200 most downloaded submissions, I estimate that 0.1% of the downloads are rated - including the funny and obvious self-downloads.
I'd suggest the users to inrease the total number of ratings at first. This would decrease the influence of the weak averaging method implicitely.

Kind regards, Jan

PS. What about allowing a six.th star for self-ratings ;-)

Hi Sean -

The greyed out first score is displayed so that you can see the change. For authors who continue to update and improve their files, this lets everyone see the improvement in ratings. Greyed out ratings are not included in the average. Only one rating counts per person.

Does this help to clarify?

Helen

Hi Helen,

But what Sean is saying is that this should be reported as
if there is only ONE rating on the file.

Suppose I rate a file with 1 star, then the author makes
great changes to the file to repair the problems. I now
update my rating to reflect the changes to 5 stars. If I
was the only person to have rated the file so far, then the
stats should say there is one rating, for a 5 star average.
The old rating should be greyed out, as it currently is.

To say there are now two ratings, with an average of 5
stars, that implies there are now TWO people who think
the submission is excellent and worth 5 stars. Given the
scarcity of people willing to provide ratings on the FEX,
a file with two 5 star ratings is surely perceived to be
better than a file with only a single 5 star rating.

Thanks,
John

Hi Oleg,

I saw your rating and comment and I have removed it.
FYI to all, we are planning to disable the ability for users to rate their own file submissions. This should be available for our next release.
