hii...i am amateur user of matlab...we are doing a project about insulating materials using matlab...we want to calculate heat transfer rate through insulating material wall and determine the thinkness of the insulating material wehre heat trasfer rate is maximum...i have no idea how to define the temperature gradient matrix for dT/dx in the equatin Q=-kAdT/dx...can anyone plzzz help us with a simple code for this equation...i would also be very pleased if i could get some suggestions to make the project better and intresting...

Hi,

There are a number of books of finite difference/elements methods. I recomend you should read at least a few chapters before starting this problem. You could start with K.J Bathe "Finite element procedures" and Osher&Fedkiw, "Level Sets Methods and Dynamic Implicit surfaces"(the second one deals with other things, but the first few chapters can be very helpful) . These require some time and investment, so if you are looking for a quick solution, probably an internet search is what you want.
Regards,
Florin

Hi,

File exchange has some entries : http://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/fileexchange/?term=heat+transfer+plate

and I am sure google/bing/yahoo(?) could suggest other solutions. I believe there was a free full matlab implemetation called FEM Lab (or something similar) that was reliable and rather easy to use for standard examples.

Good luck in you search.
