Hi Everyone:

I am thinking implement a Canny edge detector in our industry software
application, but I am not sure whether it is patented or not? I.e.,
can I use it for free in an industry application?

Sorry for asking in this group, because the image processing group
that is more suitble for this question in general does not have many
people answering questions.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Patents are granted for 20 years after date of filing in the US. You
can file for a patent up to a year after publication. Since the
original canny paper was in 1986, any patent based on the original
paper would have expired by now.
