Thread Subject: Shading area under a curve -- partially

I have a plot:

plot(x,y)

I want to shade area under the curve but only in the ranges, [x1,x2],
[x3,x4], etc. (assume all such ranges are disjoint).

A simple area plot shades the entire area under the curve. No use.
