Can Matlab/MuPAD solve partial differential equations symbolically (analytically), like in those good old Maple symbolic engine days?

Not without writing a lot of nontrivial code yourself, no.

Also solving pde's symbolically is limited to small set
of problems and specific boundary conditions. For anything
more than simple cases, one has to do it numerically anyway.

Do you happen to know if the Mathworks have any plans to implement symbolic pde solvers in the near future?

True words - for almost every field of symbolic mathematics ...

I used Matlab/Maple's symbolic solver to introduce pdes to my students. It was helpful.

Since Nasser is absolutely right with his comment, I don't expect that.
(Reiterating the obvious: This is just my personal opinion.)
