World countries shapefile to globe in mapping toolbox?

Subject: World countries shapefile to globe in mapping toolbox?

I'm looking for some hints on how to make myself a rotatable globe with countries of the world. I have found several sources of shapefiles on-line, and I can plot these in 2D, but I keep getting errors when I try to go to the globe. The issue seems to be related to reading the shapefiles with "usegeocoords" set to true. If I do that, I get an error like this, regardless of how I try to plot it (using geoshow):

"Inconsistent polygon topology: Encountered a chain of more than two connecting
pairs."

But to plot to a globe, I think I need the data to be like that, as opposed to simple X,Y coordinates. I'm still struggling to understand the mapping toolbox, so any help would be great.

I have successfully made globes with the borders displayed as simple lines, but this is not as useful since there is no color difference between the inside of a country and the outside. Things are easier to see when the countries are filled in. Thanks.
