Subject: Read RDI binary files (wave data)

Hi matlab friends,

This is a specific message related to marine sciences, so i hope somebody will read this and will be able to reply...!

I am searching for some maltab code that can read raw waves binary files from RDI ADCPs.
I found the script of Mr Rich Pawlowicz (U. of British Columbia, Dpt of Earth and Ocean Sciences) (see http://www.eos.ubc.ca/~rich/index.html#RDADCP)
That script reads current data, and it's really good.

Does somebody know about any script that can decode WAVE data?

Thanks a lot in advance!
Camille.

I assume you mean data from a pressure transducer attached to the
ADCP?
I have the info in town, but I'm on summer holidays (Southern
Hemisphere) at the bach (beach cottage).
I'll be home on Sun, so if no one else replies I'll get back then.

Hi Tideman! Happy holidays in the south!!!
No problem in waiting, on the contrary, if your script solved my problem, that will be great!!!!!!!!
thanks!

What I've found is that my routines are for Sontek ADP, not RDI ADCP,
sorry.

However, the format of the ASCII output from WavesMon is comma
delimited, which is very easily imported into Matlab using either
csvread or textscan.

And if you want to calculate the wave parameters yourself, you can get
a continuous record of pressure using the RDI routine Pkts2Txt, but be
warned this produces huge .txt files.

If you need to see the contents of the CSV log file, Table 9 in the WavesMon User's Guide lists the data format for the Format 8 log file which I think is the default. You can get the User's Guide from http://www.rdinstruments.com/cgi-bin/DWMIdataRDI_download.pl?D=WAVESDOC.EXE but you might need to set up a user name and password first.

Hi Tideman,
sorry for my late reply!

yes I would like to calculate the parameters myself. for that i need to calculate the directional spectra from the PUV triplets, which are contained in the .wvs file. The data contained in the LOGX.txt file (X is the number of the format you select for your output log file) are the averaged values of velocities and pressure.

I tried to search for the script you speak abut ( Pkts2txt) but i couldn't find it.
Could you tell me where I can download it?

Thanks!

Camille.
