single route from regional minimum

Hi, I have been following Steve's excellent path finding series the last episode of which is here: http://blogs.mathworks.com/steve/2011/12/13/exploring-shortest-paths-part-5/

I am trying to implement the non-skeleton method in 3D. The distance transforms are fine in 3D but I am finding the identification of a single route from the regional minimum difficult.

Can anyone advise a way of achieving the equivalent of bwmorph thin on a 3D case?

Thanks.
