Can I control where preferences are stored?

Can I change the folder in which preferences are stored? I used to be able to set the userprofile environment variable on Windows to change it. With Windows 7 and R2012b this does not work anymore. All I get is the dialogue that solicits activation of this release and then nothing else happens when I fill in that information.

I suppose this is mostly for the MathWorks presence on the newsgroup. Any hint will be appreciated.

I don't know. You should probably contact Technical Support with this
question.
