Glossary of terms Aorta - Main artery coming directly out of the left heart. Aortic Valve - Controls blood flow from the left ventricle into the aorta. Artery - Blood vessel carrying nutrient-rich blood away from the heart /lungs. Atria - Two chambers that form the curved top of the heart (right atrium and left atrium). Coronary - Related to the heart. Mitral Valve - Controls blood flow from the left atrium and the left ventricle. Pulmonary - Related to the lungs. Pulmonary Valve - Controls blood flow from the left ventricle into the lungs. Systemic Circulatory System - Everything in the circulatory system other than the heart and lungs. Tricuspid Valve - Controls blood flow from the right atrium into the right ventricle. Vein - Blood vessel carrying nutrient-depleted blood back to the heart /lungs. Vena Cava - Main veins leading into the heart; "hearts veins" Ventricles - Two chambers at the bottom of the heart that form a pointed base (main pumping chambers). Back to main PHYSBE page.
