Glossary of terms

  • Aorta - Main artery coming directly out of the left heart.
  • Aortic Valve - Controls blood flow from the left ventricle into the aorta.
  • Artery - Blood vessel carrying nutrient-rich blood away from the heart /lungs.
  • Atria - Two chambers that form the curved top of the heart (right atrium and left atrium).
  • Coronary - Related to the heart.
  • Mitral Valve - Controls blood flow from the left atrium and the left ventricle.
  • Pulmonary - Related to the lungs.
  • Pulmonary Valve - Controls blood flow from the left ventricle into the lungs.
  • Systemic Circulatory System - Everything in the circulatory system other than the heart and lungs.
  • Tricuspid Valve - Controls blood flow from the right atrium into the right ventricle.
  • Vein - Blood vessel carrying nutrient-depleted blood back to the heart /lungs.
  • Vena Cava - Main veins leading into the heart; "hearts veins"
  • Ventricles - Two chambers at the bottom of the heart that form a pointed base (main pumping chambers).
