Instrument Control Toolbox™ 2.6

Supported Hardware - IVI

MATLAB® is a software environment and technical computing language with over 1,000,000 users.  MATLAB software is used to control instruments, make measurements, analyze data, and build test systems.  You can analyze and visualize data in MATLAB using interactive tools and command-line functions for data analysis tasks such as signal processing, statistical analysis, digital filtering, and curve fitting.

MATLAB supports using IVI instrument drivers with the MATLAB Instrument Control Toolbox.   IVI instrument drivers often ship with your instrument and are also available from the instrument manufacturers' Web sites including from Agilent.  In addition, the IVI Foundation’s Driver Registry contains a list of contributed IVI drivers (both IVI-C and IVI-COM) that may be useful.

Once the IVI instrument driver is installed on your computer, you can automatically generate MATLAB drivers (wrappers) from the IVI instrument driver by following the instructions in the MATLAB IVI chapter in the documentation.  Several preconfigured MATLAB drivers (wrappers) are available from the MATLAB Central File Exchange by selecting “MATLAB IVI-COM” or “MATLAB IVI-C” as the Driver type.

If an IVI driver is not available for your instrument, Instrument Control Toolbox can still be used to communicate with your instrument.  You can communicate directly with the instrument using one or more instrument communication protocols including GPIB, VISA, TCP/IP, UDP, and serial.  Alternatively, you can create your own MATLAB instrument drivers with driver development tools provided in the Instrument Control Toolbox.

Useful IVI Resources:

  • Learn how to use MATLAB with IVI instrument drivers by reading Chapter 6 of the IVI Getting Started Guide.
  • View the brief recorded demo called Using MATLAB with Agilent Instruments for steps on how to get started using MATLAB with IVI instrument drivers. Even though this demo uses an Agilent instrument as the example, the steps also apply to instruments from other manufacturers.
  • Learn more about the IVI standard by visiting the IVI Foundation’s Web site.
  • Applications notes describing how to use MATLAB with IVI instrument drivers are now available directly from Keithley and Tabor.

Please use the form below to tell us about the IVI instrument driver you are using, the type of application you want to develop, or if there is information about instrument drivers you would find helpful on this Web page.  Thank you.
