• Upgraded third-party libraries and software to optimize performance and compatibility with external geospatial data sources and software packages and with the 64-bit Windows platform

• Coastlines in coast.mat updated to follow the convention used by geoshow, mapshow, and mapview to display polygons with "holes" so that outer contours run clockwise and inner contours run counter-clockwise

• New functions for geodetic-geocentric-local vertical coordinate conversion.
• The function shapewrite enables additional user control over shapefile content.
• The functions shaperead and shapewrite process data substantially faster.
• The functions mapview, mapshow, and geoshow provide proper rendering of polygons with inner rings.
• The MapViewer writes a worldfile to georeference the images it saves.
• TIGER/Line file support is enhanced.

• The new function shapewrite enables geodata to be exported in a shapefile format
• The new function etopo reads from either the 5-minute or the 2-minute global terrain data set
• gshhs now returns a version 2 geostruct
• The toolbox now excludes geopolitical data that specify national sovereignty over specific regions of the Earth. To that end, the toolbox no longer contains the functions worldlo, worldhi, usalo, usahi, and country2mtx. Related changes have been made to the functions worldmap and usamap. • Links and URLs to documentation and data files for various Internet sources of digital map data are now collected in a technical note, “Accessing Geospatial Data on the Internet for the Mapping Toolbox.”
