MATLAB and Simulink Jumpstart Services

Customized training and consulting for a fast, smooth transition to working with MathWorks products.

Projects can start slowly because engineers are working with unfamiliar tools. Optimal use of sophisticated software comes only with experience—but Jumpstart Services from The MathWorks can get your team off to a fast start.

The Jumpstart Services Package

The Jumpstart Services package is a three- or four-day, on-site engagement for teams of up to eight people. During this time, an experienced MathWorks consultant helps get your project running by:
  • Identifying your needs
  • Helping you install new software
  • Reviewing your approach to using MATLAB, Simulink, Stateflow, and other MathWorks tools
  • Providing advanced, project-specific clinics and hands-on assistance

Project Teams Who Benefit

The package is designed for project teams with up to eight members, one or more of whom recently:
  • Purchased (or plans to purchase) a MathWorks product
  • Upgraded from a previous release
  • Embarked on a project involving MathWorks products

Jumpstart Services are most beneficial for team members who possess a basic familiarity with MathWorks products or have taken core training in MATLAB, Simulink, and Stateflow.

Service Offerings

The following services are provided during a typical Jumpstart engagement.

Architecture and Needs Review

On the first day, the consultant meets with your team to discuss the problem to be solved and review your current plans. Based on this review, the consultant draws up a list of recommended standards and procedures to enable you to successfully integrate MathWorks tools into your project.

The MathWorks product set is extensive and complex. The consultant spends part of the first day helping you select the subset of tools necessary for the successful completion of your project.

Installation and Configuration (Optional)

Some sites require specific installation support. For example, a particular group within an engineering team may require guaranteed access to a particular MATLAB product, irrespective of the number of licenses purchased.

To ensure that you derive the maximum benefit from MathWorks products, the consultant can spend a day with you to configure individual tools for your current project. For example, the consultant can advise your engineers on configuring Simulink models so that they have a common “look and feel” or on setting up Real-Time Workshop for use on your workstations.

(If you have already completed the installation and configuration, an installation review will be conducted on the first day.)

Project Management and Advanced Clinics

This part of the service takes two days. It comprises a project management component and an advanced engineering clinic component. During the architecture and needs review you decide how much time will be allocated to each component.

Project Management

Drawing on years of experience in MATLAB coding and in developing and managing models in Simulink and Stateflow, the consultant will recommend how you can best use these tools to manage, develop, and document your projects. Client-specific “style guides” can be developed in order to establish a consistent set of best practices. The consultant works with one or more members of your team to generate a set of requirements for these styles.

Advanced Engineering Clinics

The engineering clinics included in the Jumpstart package are a personalized means of learning how to apply MathWorks products to your projects effectively. After reviewing key topics covered in MathWorks training courses, the consultant concentrates on the ones most relevant to your current project. The clinics are offered in the following formats:

Seminar. The clinic is presented to your entire project team. Team members have the opportunity to ask questions pertaining to their projects, and the MathWorks consultant presents examples using project cases provided by you.

One-on-one. In this format, the consultant works directly with individual team members, focusing on specific design issues, MATLAB code, Simulink and Stateflow models, and other tools pertaining to their project. The consultant also helps the team member debug existing MATLAB code and Simulink and Stateflow models.

Ordering Options

Both three- and four-day packages are available. Jumpstart Services can be ordered directly from your MathWorks sales representative or by contacting The MathWorks Consulting Services. Alternatively, they can be included in your product or training package.
