Preparing for Activation

Starting with Release 2008a, all license options require activation. In releases prior to R2008a, Network Named User and Concurrent license options required activation of the FLEXnet® license server. This process remains the same. However, the process for deploying Individual and Group license options has changed.

Changes to Individual and Group Licenses

Working with the Group Member License

Starting with R2008a prerelease, Group licenses have a new structure. For each MATLAB® product on your Group license, a unique Group Member license has been created. Administrators and asset managers use the License Center to assign products on the Group license to Group Member licenses before activating software (for Release 2008a) or getting passcodes (for previous releases).

Adding a Licensed End User to a License

For R2008a, licenses with the Stand-Alone Named User activation type require an administrator or asset manager to add the licensed end user's name to the license. When adding a user to a license, a MathWorks Account is automatically created for the user, if one does not already exist, and the account is associated with the license. If a MathWorks Account is created, the login information is e-mailed to the user.

For all other activation types, administrators and asset managers can add users' names to licenses to provide them with the ability to download and activate software. User's names can be added to the license either prior to activation in the License Center or during the activation process.

Concurrent and Network Named User Licenses

For Concurrent and Network Named User license options, no additional action is required. To use R2008a, you activate the FLEXnet network license server as you have done in previous releases by manually submitting the server host ID to The MathWorks and retrieving your License File through your MathWorks Account. The client machines that access the FLEXnet server do not require activation. For more information on using FLEXnet servers, see the FLEXnet Guide.

Contact Name Changes for R2008a

A license may have several people associated with it, each filling a particular contact role. Your role on a license determines your privileges for that license. See the complete list of contact roles and the privileges granted to each role. Starting with R2008a , some contact names have changed to better reflect their roles within the organization, as shown below.

Previous Contact Name Is now … Responsibilities
Primary contact Administrator The administrator manages end users and can perform license administration tasks in the License Center, such as assigning products on Group licenses. All MathWorks licenses require an administrator to serve as the main source of communication for the license. For an Individual license, the administrator is often also the end user.
Passcode contact Asset manager The asset manager is an optional contact on a license that has the same privileges as the administrator. There can be multiple asset managers on a license.
Update contact Update media recipient The update media recipient is an optional contact on a license that receives all software media shipments (DVD) from The MathWorks for the license.
