Written for use in an introductory course on engineering design and optimization, this book teaches the theory and concepts of optimum design through a series of examples and simple engineering applications. Throughout the text, simple design problems involving two to three design variables and three to four constraints are solved in detail to illustrate fundamental concepts and basic ideas.

The book includes a chapter on using MATLAB technical computing software and Optimization Toolbox software. Many examples of optimum design using MATLAB are also provided.
