R2008a Beta for 64-bit Intel-Based Mac Computers

How can I get a beta version of 64-bit MATLAB® for 64-bit Mac OS® X?

Customers who have a subscription to MathWorks™ Software Maintenance Service may download the professional version.

Is 64-bit MATLAB available for Student Version?

No. The 64-bit MATLAB for Mac® beta is only available for professional products.

When will 64-bit MATLAB for the Mac be available for general release?

64-bit MATLAB for the Mac will be available for general release when all third-party product dependency issues have been resolved. The earliest possible release is R2009a.

Which products are available as part of this beta?

MATLAB Image Processing Toolbox™
Aerospace Toolbox Mapping Toolbox™
Bioinformatics Toolbox™ Model Predictive Control Toolbox™
Communications Toolbox™ Neural Network Toolbox™
Control System Toolbox™ Optimization Toolbox™
Curve Fitting Toolbox™ Partial Differential Equation Toolbox™
Database Toolbox™ RF Toolbox™
Financial Derivatives Toolbox™ Robust Control Toolbox™
Financial Toolbox™ Signal Processing Toolbox™
Fixed-Income Toolbox™ Spline Toolbox™
Fuzzy Logic Toolbox™ Statistics Toolbox™
GARCH Toolbox™ System Test™
Genetic Algorithm and Direct Search Toolbox™ Wavelet Toolbox™

What are the system requirements for this beta?

Operating system: Mac OS X 10.5.2 and above for Intel® based processors
Processors: Intel 64-bit (Core 2 Duo or Xeon)
Disk space: 510 MB (MATLAB only)
RAM: 512 MB (1024 MB recommended)

Will 32-bit MATLAB run on 64-bit Mac OS X computers?

Yes. All MathWorks products for the Mac are currently 32-bit. They will run on 64-bit Macs.

Are there known issues with running MathWorks products currently available on 64-bit Intel-Based Macs?

mmfileinfo

Running mmfileinfo on any file yields blank values for the following fields:

  • Audio.Format
  • Audio.NumberOfChannels
  • Video.Format

There are currently no workarounds for this issue.

mmreader

Creating an mmreader object on a 64-bit Mac is very slow compared to a 32-bit Mac. There are currently no workarounds for this issue.

implay

The implay function in Image Processing Toolbox does not work when called on the 64-bit Mac platform. There are currently no workarounds for this issue.

Running MATLAB from the command line

Running MATLAB from the command line (/Applications/MATLAB_R2008a/bin/matlab) requires setting the MACI64 environment variable to 1 before running. Or you can add -arch maci64 to the command line. Failure to do so will cause the MATLAB shell script to attempt to run the 32-bit maci version. Opening MATLAB by double-clicking on the MATLAB 7.6 alias will automatically set MACI64 and start up maci64.

Running MATLAB by double-clicking the MATLAB 7.6 alias

If you start MATLAB by double-clicking its icon in the installation folder, and if you have more than one installation folder for MATLAB 7.6 (such as Intel 32-bit and Intel 64 beta), the MATLAB program that starts might not be the one that you double-clicked in the installation folder. Read the detailed description with recommended workaround of this problem.

Using the Start MATLAB Settings application

In the Start MATLAB Settings application, the Settings panel is disabled, which prevents you from using saved settings files or creating new ones. There are currently no workarounds for this issue.
