Why does the MATLAB installer quit without any error messages on Japanese Windows Vista?

Problem Description:

I have a Japanese Windows Vista machine with the new kanji characters installed. After starting the installer it will extract files to the Temp directory and then nothing else happens.

Solution:

The cause of this error appears to be the use of the new kanji characters that were introduced with Windows Vista. When a user logs in with a username that makes use of these characters the installer does not know how to handle them and quits.

To work around this error login with a username that does not make use of the new kanji characters.
