Why does the installer crash after entering the FIK for R2008a or higher on Windows?

Problem Description:

After entering the File Installation Key and clicking next, I get an error
EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xc0000005) at pc=0x107a9104, pid=4576, tid=564
#
# Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (10.0-b19 mixed mode windows-x86)
# Problematic frame:
# C [mwinstall.dll+0x9104] with java error logs.

Solution:

This bug has been fixed in Release 2009b (R2009b). For previous product releases, read below for any possible workarounds:

This can happen when using a File Installation Key or a PLP for a different version of MATLAB.

To resolve this, make sure you are using the correct key for this release of MATLAB. For R2008a or newer, you can get your File Installation Key from www.mathworks.com/licensecenter in the activation and installation tab.
