Enabling Experimentation in Classical Control with MATLAB, Simulink & Real-Time Windows Target

Engineering education aims to not only present scientific principles (i.e., engineering science) but also to teach students how to apply them to real problems. Therefore, hands‐on laboratories have been an integral part of the engineering curriculum since its inception.

In this webinar we demonstrate the use of a novel low‐cost experimental apparatus for use in a typical undergraduate course in control systems. The setup consists of a small DC motor attached to a pendulum rod and driving a miniature propeller. Angular position of the rod is measured by a potentiometer attached to its pivot point. A simple module created using MATLAB and Simulink reads the angle and sends command signals to the motor. The module is based on Simulink Desktop Real-Time™ and allows a sampling rate of 200Hz.

  • Development of several dynamic models of the plant and simulating its response using Simulink blocksets
  • Development, using Simulink and Simulink Desktop Real-Time, of an application for collecting the open‐loop response of the plant

  • Implementation of several controls using classical (transfer function–based) and modern (state space–based) design methods

About the Presenter: Dr. Eniko T. Enikov is an associate professor in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Arizona. He is currently leading two NSF research proposals on nonlinear dynamics and sensor development, as well as an international student exchange program funded by the U.S. Department of Education and the European Union. He received his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from University of Illinois at Chicago.
