RF Digital Twins for Wireless Communications and Radar Applications

Overview

Modern radar and wireless communications systems increasingly rely on highly programmable, wideband beamforming platforms that must support diverse applications, operating environments, and lifecycle requirements.

This complexity makes design‑by‑prototype impractical and creates a disconnect between application‑level requirements and RF hardware characterization. This presentation demystifies the concept of RF digital twin, and explains how they bridge this gap while addressing different use cases.

Focusing on RF digital twins for application and hardware development, we show how models, simulations, and measurements can be combined into a coherent digital thread across the supply chain. Starting from first‑principles models, the digital twin evolves through integration of existing IP, architectural definition, and data‑driven models informed by measurements. By supporting multiple levels of abstraction—trading fidelity for simulation speed when appropriate—the digital twin enables early feasibility studies, HW/SW co‑development, regression testing, and mission‑level performance evaluation.

A radar development example illustrates how validated digital twins allow system integrators to assess application‑specific metrics, negotiate requirements with hardware vendors, and make informed design decisions earlier, even before final hardware is available.

About the Presenter

Giorgia Zucchelli is the product manager for RF and mixed-signal at MathWorks. Before moving to this role in 2013, she was an application engineer focusing on signal processing and communications systems and specializing in analog simulation. Before joining MathWorks in 2009, Giorgia worked at NXP Semiconductors and at Philips Research. Giorgia has a master’s degree in electrical engineering and a doctorate in electronics for telecommunications from the University of Bologna.
