Add Problems to LMS Course

Note

You must first link your MathWorks® Account to the LMS before you can add MATLAB® Grader™ coding problems. See Link MathWorks Account to MATLAB Grader Assessment Content.

Note

Only a single MATLAB Grader assessment item can be linked to a single assignment in the LMS gradebook. Review the documentation for the gradebook feature of your LMS vendor for ways to combine multiple assessment scores into a single grade.

Check for Existing MATLAB Grader Integration

To determine if you can add MATLAB Grader coding problems to your LMS course, follow the instructions in this section that are applicable to your LMS and try adding a problem.

If you cannot find the MATLAB Grader integration, or it is clear that MATLAB Grader has not been integrated yet, contact your LMS administrator.

Add MATLAB Grader Coding Problems to Course in Blackboard Learn (Original)

Perform the following steps to add a problem:

  1. In Blackboard® Learn, find the course where you want to add coding problems.

  2. Within the course, go to Content > Build Content.

  3. Look for "MATLAB Grader" in the list of available content types.

  4. Select the MATLAB Grader integration.

  5. Under Information > Name, enter a name for the problem.

  6. Under Grading, set Enable Evaluation to Yes.

    • Enter a value for Points Possible. This value must be greater than zero for this assignment.

    • Set Visible to Students to Yes.

      You must change the visibility to make the content visible to students. if you are not ready to release the assignment, you can change this field to Yes at a later time.

    • Enter a valid Due Date.

  7. Fill out any other information on this page at your discretion.

  8. Click Submit.

  9. Click on the problem title to edit the problem. Blackboard Learn launches the MATLAB Grader interface for copying and creating content. You can create a new problem or select a problem from your available collections or courses.

Add MATLAB Grader Coding Problems to Course in Blackboard Learn (Ultra)

Sign in to Blackboard (Ultra) and click on the course you want to add content to.

Follow these steps:

  1. Click the plus icon that appears before or after an existing content item. Where you click determines where the new content goes.

  2. Select Content Market.

  3. In the alphabetical list, find MATLAB Grader LTI 1.3.

    If the LMS administrator named the LTI integration something else, you'll need to get that name and find it in this list.

  4. Click the plus icon in the bottom right hand corner, below the logo and text.

    DO NOT click the logo or text.

    You are returned to the course content page with an instance of new content where you clicked the plus icon. The title is the name of the integration (MATLAB Grader LTI 1.3).

  5. Click the ellipses for more actions and select Edit.

  6. Click the ellipses next to the title name to change the content title.

  7. Change Hidden from students to Visible to students.

    You must change the visibility, with or without conditions, to make the content visible to students.

  8. Check Create gradebook entry for this item.

  9. Fill out the Due date, Grade using, and Maximum points for this content.

  10. Select a category appropriate for this content. You can create a category to store all of your MATLAB-based assignments, for example, "MATLAB Assignments".

  11. Provide a description for the content and click Save.

    The updated title and description show in the list of course content.

  12. Click on the content title to edit the problem. Blackboard Learn launches the MATLAB Grader interface for copying and creating content. You can create a new problem or select a problem from your available collections or courses. To learn more, select a topic from Develop Coding Problems.

Add MATLAB Grader Coding Problems to Course in Brightspace (D2L)

If an LMS administrator has already performed MATLAB Grader integration with Brightspace®, you can add MATLAB Grader coding problems to your course.

Perform the following steps to add a problem:

  1. In Brightspace, go to the course where you want to add a MATLAB Grader coding problem.

  2. Open the Content tool.

  3. Add or select a module.

  4. Click Add Existing Activities.

  5. Select External Learning Tools.

  6. Click Create New LTI Link.

    Enter the Name you want for this link. Then, enter the URL. This value depends on which LTI version you are using. If you do not know which version to use, contact your LMS administrator.

    1. LTI 1.1: https://lms-grader.mathworks.com/launch

    2. LTI 1.3: https://learningtool.mathworks.com/v1p3/launch

    Make sure there are no leading and trailing spaces in the URL text.

  7. Click Create and Insert.

  8. Click Save and display.

  9. Click on the problem title to edit the problem. Brightspace launches the MATLAB Grader interface for copying and creating content. You can create a new problem or select a problem from your available collections or courses.

Add MATLAB Grader Coding Problems to Course in Canvas (Instructure)

If an LMS administrator has already performed MATLAB Grader integration with Canvas®, you can add MATLAB Grader coding problems to your course.

Follow the Canvas instructions in How do I add an assignment using an external app?, which explain how to add an assignment using an external tool. Some links require a third-party vendor login.

  • Look for "MATLAB Grader" in the list of available external tools.

  • After you save the changes, Canvas launches the MATLAB Grader interface for copying and creating content. You can create a new problem or select a problem from your available collections or courses.

Add MATLAB Grader Coding Problems to Course in Moodle

If an LMS administrator has already performed MATLAB Grader integration with Moodle™, you can add coding problems to your course.

Perform the following steps to add a problem:

  1. In Moodle, go to the course where you want to add a MATLAB Grader coding problem.

  2. Turn editing on.

  3. Select Add an Activity or Resource.

    Browse ACTIVITIES for "MATLAB Grader."

    • If you find the MATLAB Grader integration in the activity list, select it and click Add.

    • If you do not see the MATLAB Grader integration in the list:

      1. Select External Tool and click Add.

      2. Under Preconfigured tool, find and select the MATLAB Grader integration.

  4. Fill out activity name and any other desired settings.

  5. Click Save and display.

    Moodle launches the MATLAB Grader interface for copying and creating content. You can create a new problem or select a problem from your available collections or courses.

Add MATLAB Grader Coding Problems to Course in Open edX

If MATLAB Grader has already been integrated into the course, you can add MATLAB Grader coding problem.

Note

Only problems added in either the View Live Version or Preview view of the course are visible to students.

Step 1. Add LTI component:

  1. In Studio, go to the course you want.

  2. Create or go to the unit where you want to add a MATLAB Grader coding problem.

  3. Follow the instructions in Adding an LTI Component to a course unit from Open edX®.

    1. MATLAB Grader requires authentication. If your LMS administrator has not added the LTI passport to your course settings, you will not be able to continue.

    2. For the following fields, get the values from your LMS administrator.

      • LTI ID—same ID used in the LTI passport string

      • LTI URL—launch URL

      Make sure there are no leading and trailing spaces in the ID and URL text.

    3. Adjust the remaining LTI component settings, as needed.

  4. Click Save.

Step 2. Add your content:

  1. Click Preview, or, after publishing your changes, View Live Version.

  2. Open edX launches the MATLAB Grader interface for copying and creating content. You can create a new problem or select a problem from your available collections or courses.

Add MATLAB Grader Coding Problems to Course in Sakai

If an LMS administrator has already performed MATLAB Grader integration with Sakai®, you can add MATLAB Grader coding problems to your course.

Perform the following steps to add a problem:

  1. In Sakai, go to the site where you want to add a MATLAB Grader coding problem.

  2. Select Lessons from the Tool menu.

    If Lessons is not visible

    1. Select Site Info > Manage Tools.

    2. Select Lessons from the list of tools.

    3. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Continue.

    4. Click Finish.

  3. Click Add Content +.

  4. Select Add External Tool, located at the bottom of the list.

  5. Click the tool name corresponding to MATLAB Grader.

    For Tool Title, enter the problem name.

  6. Click Save.

To launch the problem, click on the problem name. Sakai launches the MATLAB Grader interface for copying and creating content. You can create a new problem or select a problem from your available collections or courses.

Add MATLAB Grader Coding Problems to Course in Other LMS

Because each LMS has their own instructions, find the documentation for your LMS or contact your LMS administrator for help in finding out if MATLAB Grader has already been integrated.

Perform the following steps to add a problem:

  1. In your LMS, go to the course where you want to add a MATLAB Grader coding problem.

  2. Follow the instructions for adding an LTI or External Tool problem type in your LMS. If available, look for "MATLAB Grader" in a list of available or preconfigured tools.

  3. After you add a problem, launch the problem to edit it. This action launches the MATLAB Grader interface for copying and creating content. You can create a new problem or select a problem from your available collections or courses.
