Why does the Installer give error "InstallForMacOSX can't open library: /usr/lib/libgcc_s.1.dylib" when installing on MacOSX?

When launching the installer I receive the error message below:
dyld: InstallForMacOSX can't open library: /usr/lib/libgcc_s.1.dylib (No such file or directory, errno = 2)

This error indicates that the version of MATLAB you are trying to install is not supported on this version of Mac OS X. Please reference the MATLAB system requirements page linked below.
