need some help about using MATLAB to implement a speech compression system

I am a communication&electronic student but my communication module start next week. I was assigned a project(finish in 5 weeks) that generate a speech signal then put into MATLAB functions you(I) write to test the algorithms. Provided theory:
non-uniform quantization(A-law and u-law).
Huffman coding.
arithmetic coding.
Can anyone provide me some tips about it? I never expect anyone do it for me because it is cheating, but I really need some help to get my work start. Thank you all.
