is corr2 have a scientific name? is there any paper which describe corr2 function?

is corr2 function have a scientific name? is there any paper which describe corr2 function? I used this function to find the correlation coefficient between two moving points in space(3D movement) to find the correlation between them movement, can this function do this or we can use it only in image processing?
