X11 Windows not forwarding from remote machine to local machine

I'm trying to work remotely and have figure windows from matlab display on my laptop. Matlab is hosted on a mac workstation at my office.

I'm pretty sure X11 is set up properly because I can run other programs and their windows are forwarding. In matlab, however, the windows show up on the remote machine where matlab is running.

With older version of matlab, I fixed this by using -nojvm. Now, however, figures do not work with -nojvm.

Any solutions?
