Any good techniques for segmentation of Palm of hand from a given image under variable lighting conditions?

I want to know any good technique for identifying the palm of hand from the background under variable lighting conditions. The purpose is to identify the gestures made by the finger positions.

Can you suggest me any simple method of your choice? I am an amateur in image processing. Using that technique I should at-least be able to identify the hand in a still image.

I've not had the occasion to find hands in images yet, so I don't have a favorite. I don't really even know much about them. Try to look for "review" papers and give one a try.
