Matlab Home. Possible to get the coders?

33 views (last 30 days)
Hi Guys,
I have tried contacting sales but it looks like they don't answer questions about Student or Home edition!
I am looking to get MatLab as a home user in order to learn MatLab/Simulink.
I am not doing a course at an Educational establishment but rather studying at home in my own time.
I’m interested in the following:
MatLab, Simulink, Audio System Toolbox, Signal Processing Toolbox, DSP System Toolbox, MatLab Coder and Simulink Coder
The problem is I cannot seem to add MatLab Coder and Simulink Coder to the order, they are missing in the Home edition although they are there in the student edition.
Is it not possible for me to get the Coders?
Cheers
Andy

I am sorry to hear about your experience.
You are correct. MATLAB Home is designed for hobbyists and code generation technology was not seen as something for this target group. This may or may not change in the future, but this is currently how it is.
Maybe there is a MOOC lecture for you that teaches Signal Processng with MATLAB and you can have a structured learning plus software through that?

The products listed in the online sales form for MATLAB Home license are the only products available for MATLAB Home license.

I am very disappointed to have spent much time and money learning MATLAB/SIMULINK with the aim of producing control code for home projects only to find out now that embedded coder is not available for the home user. You should be more transparent about this up front.

Matlab Coder is very useful for accelerating the code, when the code cannot be vectorized easily. And there are several requests from home users (See https://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/answers/271377-why-is-matlab-coder-not-available-in-the-home-version-of-a-license) for using coder on Raspberry Pi or Arduino hardware as well.
There are many alternative softwares rapidly becoming mature, such as Python (with Ipython/Spyder IDE), Julia and R (with RStudio IDE). This and other kinds of license limitations are really pushing the users to such free software instead. For example, the deep learning ecosystem is much more prosperous around Python rather than Matlab. While I do like Matlab because of its good GUI, documentation and convenient toolkits, I hope Mathworks can listen more to its users and consider users' needs.

Wow guys, I'm so lucky that I've found this topic. I was about to buy Matlab Home at the webstore. I was sure that having Matlab Coder and Simulink coder I would be able to convert some models into C code. I also thought that it would come together with Matlab / Simulink. Unfortunately for enthusiasts is very hard to get any commercial support. They just ignore us! Big disappointment that the coders don't come together. I'll drop the products on my cart!
The thing is that depending on what enthusiasts are researching a new great company may rise. It would be mutually benefic if Matlab could encourage us.

Yes, same here.
I use Matlab at work, but at my new job they don't seem to use Matlab.
So, I will have to look for alternatives.
I really don't understand how they can assume Matlab and Simulink Coder are not for home users? Do they know of the Maker Scene? Doesn't Mathworks even provide Coder Targets for Raspberry Pie???

Hi Andreas,
Thanks very much for the reply. The online course idea is good but not for me, I prefer the books approach.
It seems a shame that they don't see hobbyists as wanting the code generation, I think there are loads of hobbyists that would be interested.
I have just been looking at Scilab/Xcos/Scicos, maybe thats the way I will go. I need to have a look into it some more.
All the best and thanks for your help.

Hi Andreas,
Just thought I would follow this up, having looked at the other solutions I ended up purchasing MatLab, Simulink and the toolboxes.
Maybe one day they will allow the coders for home users and I can get them then.
All the best
Andy

Have Matlab Coder, Embedded Coder, and Simulink Coder been added to MATLAB Home Edition? Could you please give information about this?
