When I run the Tech Preview of MATLAB Drive Connector, why is MATLAB R2017a very slow to start or change folders?

This is a known issue. We recommend you upgrade to v1.0 of MATLAB Drive Connector. For more information on making that transition, see this MATLAB Answer. Alternatively, you can install a patch to address the issue. Get the patch from the bug report.
