How can I add new desktop code font to Matlab on Ubuntu?

Is there a way to add a new font to the desktop code font options in Matlab? The default (monospaced) is fine, but I much prefer the look of something like Monaco for programming. If anyone knows how to do this, help would be much appreciated!
Also, I'm running Matlab R2017b on Ubuntu 16.05.

Does MathWorks response to a similar question help? It mentions windows and linux, not Ubuntu.
