Here are descriptions of the difference of each version.
Student version is not available for government, commercial, or other organizational use. You may not use the software for profit or revenue generating activities. Available toolboxes are here
Home version is not available for government, academic, research, commercial, or other organizational use. Available toolboxes are here.
I think available toolboxes are the same, but Student version is less expensive. Each toolbox is lower price, and it has "Student Suite" package.

I would like to emphasize a point: you cannot use the Home version for course work, or for writing research papers.
In theory you cannot use the Student version to explore parts of MATLAB that are included in the toolbox but which are not used by any course you are taking, because the Student version is restricted to use in fulfilling degree requirements. However, I would tend to doubt that Mathworks would be upset about an eager exploring more about MATLAB out of interest, or to learn material to be used in a later course, or to help decide whether a particular course is of sufficient interest to take for credit.

Thanks for the insight. I have a student version, I am no longer a student but want to peruse math topics in Vector and tensor calculus and alo Differential geometry, and thought the home version would be useful.
