What is the significance of variance and correlation of a signal?

if there is a statement that a signal has a variance of 0.1 what would you understand?

I would not understand anything in particular. Is that a variance of 0.1 megaparsec-squared, or a variance of 0.1 attoseconds-squared? Variance is meaningless without a unit of measure.
If you are interested in what variance means, then research it such as via wikipedia.
