Why do .m files not open when double-clicked in the Finder (Mac osx 10.6.8, Matlab 2011a)?

.m files do not open in the Matlab editor when I double click them in the Finder window.
If Matlab's already open, the focus will shift to Matlab but the file will not open; if Matlab's not open, then it opens but the file does not.
This did not use to be the case on previous Matlab versions. I'm using Matlab 2011a on mac osx 10.6.8.
Has anyone encountered a solution to this problem?

This just tickled a vague memory for me. I think it was a bug in that release. But the memory is not a strong one, so I am not at all certain.
