Find area covered by a single moving object in a figure

I have an updating plot which plots a moving object containg a position value of x and y coordinates. If this object was to travel around a grid how could i match its intantaneous position to the grid of the plot to track the coordinates it has covered? From this i want to provide a percentage of the grid covered.
