I have a brand new MacBook Pro with a quad core i7 and 8GB of RAM, which should be ample power for MatLab, however, when I open MatLab it literally takes minutes to open (I timed it and it took 3 minutes and 5 seconds to open). I am running R2013b. I have the toolbox path cache on and it is a brand new computer with a fresh install of MatLab so the directory shouldn't be too big. Any ideas on why it is taking so long? I can run very intense programs on here without any issue-it only seems to be MatLab.
Thanks!

I did get a solution to my issue after a lengthy discussion with the support staff. My issue was that I had Avira running and it was actively scanning MatLab. I had to add MatLab as an exception in Avira and it runs much better now. I should have expected that but it truly slipped my mind and I had assumed it was a MatLab issue since everything else ran fine! Therefore, if you have some sort of virus scanner running (actively) then that may be your issue-try adding an exception-which in Avira is done in the terminal, with instructions found with a quick Google search. This is a pretty easy fix so I was glad to see that it resolved my issue. I hope that I have helped and if not I would recommend the support staff-I emailed them and they were very courteous, quick and thorough with their assistance. They stuck with me for a few days (email was kinda slow-constant "email-tag") until we resolved the issue. Good luck!

Yes it worked...if you can add a Matlab exception in your anti-virus, so the virus won't scan Matlab, that will help. It will not scan Matlab at the startup anymores so it opens fast. If you can't add an exception, you have to disable the anti-virus for the moment you want to open Matlab... Thanks Al

Al: it looks like what they told you was one of the items in the support search that I referred you to:
It's basically the same reason though the Answer they gave was for Mcafee instead of for Avira. But the issue I suppose could happen for any virus scanner and any operating system. I think they should make the answer more general (not mentioning only Mcafee).
