Why does the license manager report MLM exited with status 52 (No license file) with the Polyspace License Manager on Linux?

I am using the network license manager shipped with Polyspace on Linux. When starting the license manager I get the following errors in my logfile:
14:35:05 (lmgrd) License file(s): /usr/local/PolySpace/FLEXnet/license.dat
14:35:05 (lmgrd) lmgrd tcp-port 27000
14:35:05 (lmgrd) Starting vendor daemons ...
14:35:05 (lmgrd) Started MLM (internet tcp_port 51509 pid 9943)
14:35:05 (MLM) FLEXnet Licensing version v11.8.0.0 build 81116 i86_lsb
14:35:05 (MLM) Cannot open license file /usr/local/PolySpace/FLEXnet/license.dat
14:35:05 (MLM) EXITING DUE TO SIGNAL 52 Exit reason 20
14:35:05 (lmgrd) MLM exited with status 52 (No license file)
14:35:05 (lmgrd) Please correct problem and restart daemons
14:35:56 (lmgrd) lmgrd will now shut down all the vendor daemons
I can see in the logfile that the path to license.dat is correct. Why can't lmgrd find the license file?

This enhancement has been incorporated in Release 2012a (R2012a). For previous product releases, read below for any possible workarounds:
The issue may occur due to encoding issue with the license file. This can happen even if the contents of the license file appear to be formatted properly. If you get this error, copy and paste each line of your license file in a new file. Afterwards, try restarting the network license manager using the new license file.
