To find your User Name, follow the instructions below for your operating system.
The fastest way to get your User Name is from a Windows Command Prompt:
  • Locate the search field. On Windows 7 this is in the Start Menu, on Windows 8/8.1 this is on the Start Screen, and on Windows 10 this is in the Taskbar
  • Enter "cmd" into the search field and type enter
In the Command Prompt, enter the following command:
set username
To obtain your User Name, open a Terminal window:
  • Open Finder
  • Open the "Applications" folder
  • Open the "Utilities" folder
  • Start the "Terminal" application
In the Terminal window, enter the following command:
To obtain your User Name, open Terminal and run the following command:
The User Name can also be obtained by using the lmutil.exe utility included with the MATLAB installation. You can run the following commands to determine the User Name needed for activation:
"C:\Program Files\MATLAB\R20XXx\etc\winXX\lmutil.exe" lmhostid -user
The User Name will be displayed as “USER=_<your_login_name>”
/Applications/ lmhostid -user
The User Name will be displayed as “USER=_<your_login_name>”
/usr/local/MATLAB/R2018b/etc/glnxa64/lmutil lmhostid -user
The User Name will be displayed as “USER=_<your_login_name>”
If access to the command window is not available, you can use the MATLAB activation client to determine what your Login Name is. To do this, you will need to first open the MATLAB activation client. The activation client can be found in the following locations:
C:\Program Files\MATLAB\R20XXX\bin\win64\activate_matlab.exe.
Use Finder to go to /Applications . From there, control-click (right click) on the icon for your MATLAB version, such as . In the menu, choose "Show package contents". In that directory, you will find an
Once the activation client is open,
  • Click on “_Activate Manually without the Internet” _and click next.
  • Click on “_I do not have a license file. Help me with the next steps”_
  • On this screen you will see your Login Name: “_Computer Login Name:<your_login_name>”_

When I go through the activation process all over again and add my license file, it never asks for the user name and says everything is activated.
When I try to launch Matlab however, it shows me the -9 error saying the username is incorrect. Can someone help me on this? How do I change the username? And why is it incorrect because I was never asked to input a username, I just added to path to my license file.

If you added the path a license file, its possible that license file had an incorrect username set to it. You would need to reactivate again from the website with the correct username.

if you are using Linux, avoid using "sudo ./matlab" to launch the application, instead just use "./matlab"

This answer is very helpful. I was unable to activate MatLab on my borrowed laptop. I kept typing "Student User" for my user name and MatLab kept yelling at me for being the wrong user. Tried "set username" and found that my ACTUAL user name was "Administrator". Tried that and it works!
