Considered as an alternative to fossil fuels, bioethanol can be produced using different raw materials, as well as by biomass conversion. Furthermore, ethanol is considered the cleanest, least toxic, easily biodegradable liquid fuel and produces fewer airborne pollutants than petroleum fuel.
This work includes the non-linear model, the linearization and the design of an LQR controller for a continuous fermentation bioprocess used to produce ethanol. Fermentation takes place in a CSTR under isothermal conditions. This bioprocess requires the design of a reliable control scheme that can ensure a high production of alcohol and a minimal amount of residual substrate.
