Before R2009b, it was only possible to customize Editor and Command Window keyboard shortcuts, choosing from Windows, MATLAB® standard/Emacs, and Macintosh sets. In R2009b, the MATLAB® desktop has configurable keyboard shortcuts, and the default values were changed to improve consistency across the desktop.
These files represent configurations that the user could have selected in R2009a and earlier releases, although these do not match the default configurations that MATLAB shipped with. For instance, if you had modified your preferences on the Windows platform to use straight Windows keyboard shortcuts in both the Editor and Command Window, this combination is represented by "ExplicitWindowsSet.xml". Likewise, if you had modified your preferences on the Macintosh Platform to use Windows keyboard shortcuts in both the Editor and Command Window, this is represented by "ExplicitWindowsSet_Mac.xml".

Sets representing different choices in the Command Window and the Editor have both selections described in the name. For example, "ExplicitCmdWinWindowsEditorMac.xml" corresponds to having selected Windows shortcuts in the Command Window and Macintosh shortcuts in the Editor.

To use these files in R2009b and future releases, unzip them and then load the desired XML file via MATLAB's Keyboard Shortcuts preference panel, selecting "Browse..." from the "Active settings" dropdown list. MATLAB will then read in the XML file contents and add the keyboard shortcut set to the dropdown list.

Note though that these files will not continue to evolve as the MATLAB Desktop changes. For instance, if a new keyboard shortcut is introduced for a desktop action in a future release, you will not see this assignment because these keyboard shortcut sets explicitly list all the R2009a shortcuts only.

The three sets representing the R2009a defaults for Windows, UNIX, and Macintosh platforms shipped with R2009b as alternate keyboard shortcut sets. If you wish to download these files, see the entry entitled "MATLAB Desktop R2009a Default Keyboard Shortcut sets". These sets represent the following configurations: Command Window MATLAB standard/Emacs and Editor Windows on the Windows platform, Command Window MATLAB standard/Emacs and Editor Emacs on the UNIX platform, Command Window MATLAB standard/Emacs and Editor Macintosh on the Macintosh platform.
